Assembly in Brief: 220th General Assembly (2012)

On July 9th, the 220th General Assembly (2012) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) adjourned after a week of worship and work as the highest council of the denomination. Just under 900 elected commissioners and advisory delegates from every presbytery came from north, south, east, and west to discern together the mind of Christ for the PC(USA).

You can veiw a summary of the Assembly "in Brief."  This 12-page booklet contains stories and photographs from the 220th General Assembly (2012).

“Assembly in Brief" is specifically designed for people in the pew who want a quick, readable summary of the General Assembly,” says Presbyterian News Service Coordinator Jerry Van Marter, the publication’s writer/editor. “We publish it in bulletin-insert size so congregations can use it in their Sunday worship bulletin or church newsletter, whether it’s print or electronic.”

Growing

Find Marshall Presbyterians serving refreshments during the French Broad Friday Mermaid parade. Be sure to notice the wooden cross placed in front of the church before Easter . . . new life is growing from it! Marshall Presbyterian Church has recently celebrated new members and graduates. Sunday's worship begins at 11. Sunday school classes for children and adults begin at 10 am. All are welcome.

Holy Week at Marshall Presbyterian Church

All are welcome to join with us during any time this Holy Week!

Our Seder meal is Thursday, April 5, 6:30 pm at which time we remember the Passover celebration and the last Supper.

At noon on Good Friday, April 6, join Reverend Upchurch in the sanctuary for a reading of the Gospel accounts of the final hours of Jesus' life. 

Easter Sunday begins with a Sunrise Service with the 1st Baptist Church on the island.  The service is at 8 am followed by breakfast at the 1st Baptist Church.

Sunday School is studying "Walking the Way of the Cross with Paul" at 10 am on Sunday mornings, including Easter.

And, Easter Sunday worship will be at 11am.  Come celebrate the promise of resurrection with us!

Lent and Easter

Marshall Presbyterian Church will begin the Lent season with Ash Wednesday services at noon and 7pm on February 22.  

A SERVICE OF WHOLENESS AND HEALING will be held on February 28. Healing and wholeness is at the very heart of God's intention for all humanity (Isaiah 40:29-31; Ephesians 2:10). Over 1/3 of the gospel stories are devoted to Jesus' healing ministry. In the Bible, the root Hebrew and Greek words for “salvation” (shalom and sozo, respectively) both mean "wholeness/completeness.”  Feb. 28's service will be a quiet time of meditation, prayer, wholeness, and healing.

Palm Sunday and Easter will be celebrated during regular worship, 11 am on Sunday mornings.  On Easter, April 8, we will join with the 1st Baptist Church for a sunrise service on the island, 7:30 am followed by rolls and coffee at the 1st Baptist Church.  

Ash Wednesday and Service of Healing and Wholeness

Ash Wednesday Service

Join your community for an Ash Wednesday service at 12:15 on Feb. 22.  Sandwiches will be served afterwards.  Those  who work elsewhere or go to school, please speak with Rev. Upchurch if you would like to have another service at 7 pm.

Presbyterians renewing

Reverend Upchurch is leading us through a series of messages on Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds based on the Scriptures such as 1 Corinthians 6:20 which tells us to “glorify God in your body” (1 Cor. 6:20).  


February 19th's 5 Cents a Meal offering is sent to the Western North Carolina Presbytery. Twice a year the Presbytery Hunger Committee reviews grant requests from regional ministries working with those who are poor. These agencies must have programs that meet the guidelines adopted by Presbytery, be endorsed by local Presbyterian churches, and representatives must meet with the Hunger Committee. International programs/agencies receiving funds must have been approved by the PCUSA, or else receive approval for Presbytery’s Coordinating Council. The funds are allocated as follows: International projects: 55%; Regional projects: 40%; Education and Administrative costs: up to 5% (with the unused portion allocated to international projects).  Madison County's Neighbors in Need program has received grants from the Presbytery Hunger Committee in past years. 

Christmas

The Christmas Eve Cantata was filled with beautiful music, good fellowship, an offering for Neighbors in Need, and gifts of Pokes filled with fruit and candy -- a mountain tradition.  

Church will be held at 11 am on New Years Day.
